Retain vs ChurnZero

Retain vs ChurnZero, minus the demo call. ChurnZero is an enterprise CS platform for teams with CSMs. Retain is self-serve churn prediction for small teams that can no longer keep a close eye on every account.

Pricing and features below come from both products' public pages, as of September 2026.

These two barely compete. ChurnZero is built for companies with a bench of customer success managers running playbooks and QBRs. Retain is built for the company where there is no bench to run anything and the team can no longer keep a close eye on every account. Same word on the box, very different tool inside.

TL;DR

  • Pick ChurnZero if you have a CS team running playbooks, QBRs, and renewals on mid-market or enterprise accounts.
  • Pick Retain if you're past product-market fit, one customer is worth hundreds of dollars a month, and someone already handles accounts but nobody's whole job is watching for churn. Warning before the cancel, no multi-week rollout.
  • They aren't really competitors. They're different weight classes for different buyers.

Two products, two jobs

ChurnZero is a customer success platform. A CS team runs its accounts there: health scores, plays, customer journeys, surveys, renewal forecasting.

Retain does one job. It reads product usage and payment signals, scores each account in real time, and warns you before a customer cancels, with the reason why.

So one of them is a team's operating system. The other is an alarm.

ChurnZero is strong at the thing it's for

It calls itself a customer growth platform powered by AI agents, and the feature list backs that up: customer health scoring, customer journeys, plays and automation, in-app communications, and renewal forecasting in one place.

There's a real surveys layer too, with NPS, CSAT, and CES, plus reporting dashboards. It connects to Salesforce, HubSpot, billing tools like Stripe and Chargebee, Slack, Teams, and warehouses like Snowflake and BigQuery.

If you have CSMs on named accounts, all of that matters. A play that sends the right task to the right person at the right moment is what a CS team actually needs, and ChurnZero is good at being the place that team works from.

Retain, and the much smaller thing it does

Retain isn't trying to be a CS platform. It's the alarm that goes off before a customer leaves, for teams where nobody is watching accounts full time.

There are two inputs. Feature usage, which you can send from our SDK, a single API call, or the events already flowing into PostHog. And payments, from Stripe or Polar.

Retain scores every account off those and pings you the moment one turns risky, with the reason attached and a suggested move.

When an account starts going quiet, Retain drafts a win-back message based on how that customer actually used the product, then counts the revenue you save once you act. There's no playbook builder, no journey designer, no seat to fill.

Setup is around 10 minutes and there's no data team involved. That's the design goal: churn prediction one person can turn on between support tickets, priced for someone who isn't signing an annual enterprise contract.

The tradeoff is real. Retain won't run your QBRs, forecast renewals across a book of business, or build a 12-step customer journey. Needing those is a sign you've grown past it.

The test that sorts this in ten seconds

Do you have someone whose full-time job is keeping customers?

If yes, ChurnZero will do more for you. You have CSMs, named accounts, renewal and QBR motions, and a real need for plays, journeys, in-app comms, and surveys in one system. "Our CS team needs an operating system" is the problem it was built for.

If that someone is you, between everything else you do, Retain is the lighter fit. You just need a heads-up on the accounts going quiet, early enough that an email still fixes it.
